Do you remember going to your Grandparents’ Cottage and recall the pleasures of old fashioned cottage fun and family memories? Not many of these cottages exist any longer but we have found one… Ano-A-Tok (meaning House of the Winds) is a unique lakeside summer cottage on Halls Lake in the Highlands of Haliburton. With the exception of running water, electricity, a modern bathroom and basic kitchen appliances, this cottage still remains as it was in 1932. All walls are wood inside and out. The old style windows swing open and whatever breeze is blowing would be the only type of air conditioning available. There are two table locations to dine outside, moderating wind, shade and sun.
The kitchen is outfitted with everything you need to cook up basic fare for a gathering of friends or family and there is a charcoal BBQ to add to the flavour of the meals. The rustic fireplace was hand built from local rough granite. For cool mornings, there's extra heat from a small woodstove in the kitchen. Bedrooms are small but charmingly decorated. There's only one bathroom! But it's complete with running hot and cold, even a shower and tub. Note: for the first 63 years there was no bathtub, and only cold running water. Electricity was installed in 1995. Very little else about the cottage has changed since it was built by the Owner's Grandpa in 1932. The floors are worn wood with a few mats and no carpeting. No TV and no Wi-Fi, but there is good cell phone coverage. There's an old piano that stays pretty well in tune. Other diversions include Crokinole, Scrabble, cards and lots of books.
Sitting on 5 acres of untouched land with mature trees, a sand beach and many serene vantage points along natural footpaths, you will be able to experience nature as it was enjoyed over 80 years ago. The Cottage veranda faces the evening sun as it dips behind the hills across Halls Lake. Ano-A-Tok is a truly classic Canadian summer cottage, available to a select few visitors. We are talking screen-door slapping old-fashioned summer cottage here! Ano-A-Tok is looking for people who appreciate old style of cottages, and who will take care of the treasured family possessions that fill every nook and cranny. We look forward to hearing your stories of past cottage memories and answering any questions you may have about the experience you will enjoy at Ano-A-Tok
